Grains in relation to other grains

The structure of the Forest allows for guided pathways to acquire knowledge in a recommended order. However the site is also flexible enough to permit free navigation between grains in relationship. The types of relationship may be any of the following:

  • The grain may be a Concept which may have an Illustrationavailable
  • The grain may be an Illustration from which it is possible to discover the Concept
  • The grain may be a Beginning piece of knowledge and to select this grain will led to an extension ofknowledge
  • The grain may be an Extension of an idea and by choosing the grain related to this one you will discoverbeginningknowledge
  • The grain may have a Conceptual relationship to another in closeproximity
  • There may be another reason for the grains to be related, such as being available in another Language (cross-language link).

Grain relationships are shown on the right side navigation panel which is collapsible. This panel also shows what other areas or modules the grain may be linked to, as well as any linked fruit.

The multimedia fruit bowl

The fruit bowl is where the fruits are stored. Fruits are support materials in various file formats stored on diverse sites, NOT part of this forest. They have been made available to illustrate and reinforce material in particular grains. They may consist of slideshow presentations, pdfs, videos, powerpoint presentations, recorded webinars, photographs, for example. They are numbered and their hyperlinks recorded in a central database within the Drupal system which powers the Forest. They are only available to view if they have been linked to a grain.

Introduction to a Module (study interest)

Modules are themes of study and are accessible by clinking on the blue link on the Home page along the left side of the page.

When you begin to explore the Forest  material you need to choose a theme or MODULE that suits your needs and interests. Let’s recap on how the study material is structured…

  1. The Forest  can simply list study material as a Table of Contentslike in a book with a list of information available, or you can follow a Recommended Pathwaywhich defines your suggested order of materials to discover and digest or perhaps you will prefer to jump from one key grainof knowledge to another.
  2. The Table of Contentsfor each module is laid out logically like a book. The Guided or recommended Pathwaywill include some areas which contain grains of knowledge which might also be offered on other pathways. You decide in what order you would like to study the material. You can just jump around the site from grain to grain.
  3. AREASwithin modules contain grains of knowledge

When you arrive at a GRAINof information (within an Area) you will discover key learnings.

Attached to this will be other resources which support this. They are Fruit. They may include pdfs, videos, slideshows, sound files and word documents,  interactive files and links to other websites. Visitors can use these fruit to support their study.

Resources have been supplied by a variety of learning institutions and we expect you to respect this. Please refer to our legal disclaimer and information for more details. Contributions are generally available free of restrictions, wherever possible. Fruit can be downloaded.

Sometimes grains are related to each other. They contain complementary or deeper knowledge. You decide which pieces of knowledge you want to study.
