Grains in relation to other grains
The structure of the site allows for a guided pathway to acquire knowledge in a recommended order. However the site is also flexible enough to permit free navigation between grains in relationship. The types of relationship may be one or other of the following:
- The grain may be a Concept which may have an Illustration available
- The grain may be an Illustration from which it is possible to discover the Concept
- The grain may be a Beginning piece of knowledge and to select this grain will led to an extension of knowledge
- The grain may be an extensionof an idea and by choosing the grain related to this one you will discoverbeginningknowledge
- The grain may have a conceptual relationship to another in closeproximity
- There may be another reason for the grains to be related, such as being available in another language (cross-language link).
The multimedia fruit bowl
The fruit bowl is where the fruits are stored. Fruits are support materials in various file formats stored on diverse sites. They have been made available to illustrate and reinforce material in particular grains. They may consist of slideshow presentations, pdfs, videos, sound files, recorded webinars, photographs, for example. They are numbered and their hyperlinks recorded in a central database. They are only available to view if they have been linked to a grain.

Introduction to a Module (study interest)
Modules are themes of study and are listed on the Home page along the left side of the page.
When you contribute material you need to choose a theme or MODULE that suits your material, a place for it to live. If a suitable module does not exist you can create a new one.
- The site can simply list your material as a Table of Contentslike in a book with a list of information available, or you can suggest a Recommended Pathwaywhich defines your suggested order of materials to discover and digest or perhaps visitors will prefer to jump from one key grainof knowledge to another.
- The Table of Contents for each module is laid out logically like a book. The Guided or recommended path will include some areas which contain grains of knowledge which might also be offered on other pathways. You decide in what order you would recommend visitors study the material. You can even just jump around the site from grain to grain. You decide how you want visitors to access this information.
- AREAS within modules contain grains of knowledge
When you arrive at a GRAIN of information (within an Area) you will discover key learnings.
- Attached to this will be other resources which support this. They are Fruit. They may include pdfs, videos, slideshows and word documents, interactive files and links. Visitors can use these fruit to support their study. Resources have been supplied by a variety of learning institutions and we expect visitors to respect this. Please refer to our legal disclaimer and information for more details.
- Sometimes grains are related to each other. They contain complementary or deeper knowledge. You decided which pieces of knowledge are part of the same Module

Before you add material to this site – read, select, organise, assemble
- You need to read through this manual and then organise your material before you get started. This will require consideration of the best ways for students to study your material, what materials, in what order, differing levels of understanding that you can offer, support materials, tools and techniques to stimulate motivation to study your material.
- What existing Module should your material fit into? If it doesn’t fit anything you will need to create your own module
- What Areas or groupings of information should there be within the module? Name them and number them. This will make it easier for you when it comes time to entering your material onto the site.
- What key ideas and concepts (Grains) will be housed within the Areas? List, name and number your grains to make your data entry easier later.
- Do you have grains that are related to each other in terms of pre and post knowledge etc Information on types of grain to grain relationships may be found in the GRAINS section PART 3
- What fruit is available to support your particular grains? It’s not essential but will be attractive and useful to students/visitors. Ensure you have accurate hyperlinks
- Decide in what order the Areas and Grains should be visited. This will be needed to define the learning pathways
- Assemble all your materials once you have organized all the above. Now you are ready to contribute.
