short description

To reach a more sustainable energy supply, we need to switch to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, water and bio-energy. It is expected that bio-energy will play an important role in achieving climate goals. Large-scale biofuel production can have both positive and negative effects. Thus, the production of biofuels could lead to a decrease but also to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, can strengthen or weaken the food security, and can have both positive and negative impacts on soil, water and biodiversity. Whether production of bio-fuels will lead to positive or negative effects will depend on the type of production chain, how the chain is arranged and where the production of biofuels takes place. Despite the fact that all production chains are different, standardized methods can be developed to quantify the durability. This is important in order to make to well-uniformed investment and policy decisions on biofuels.
