The research laboratory FLUXUS (FEC/UNICAMP) has in the last 10 years developed research projects on infrastructure networks and socio-environmental sustainability. The current group of researchers considers urban planning to be a fundamental transversal vector in defining its thematic research area. This includes education for urban sustainability, industrial ecology, urban metabolism, environmental public policies and regional landscapes.
REEDS Research Laboratory works in this area of creation and application of ecological economics knowledge and so both organisations are interested in the socio-environmental sustainability as it relates to architects, urban planners, civil engineers and environmental managers. Currently these aspects are not a key part of the curricula and both institutions would like to see a better integration of sustainability issues within their institutions educational offers.
Senior researchers from FLUXUS and REEDS acknowledged that a basic education in the fundamentals of environmental sustainability is missing for many engineers and that professionals with a stronger technical background in this field are needed.
An international symposium in Paris 1996 recommended guidelines for the creation of a global group of researchers and CEOs. Since then several new curricula have been created and there is a growing official recognition for the need for greater sustainability education for civil engineers.
A conference will be organised and during this meeting which will include other invited research institutions from different countries, they will be asked to formalise the future network. We forsee regular meetings occuring to implement collaborative research.
The network intends incouraging and strengthening relations between members. It wants principles of Social Economy to be fundamental pillars in the quest to strengthen the use of sustainable development principles to be integrated into the work carried out by the building profession.
