background and objectives

The ViViane prototype has been developed within the VIRTU@LIS project (Social Learning on Environmental Issues with the Interactive Information and Communication Technologies) funded by the Information Society Technologies program (5th Framework Programme, European Commission). VIRTU@LIS is composed of specialists from ICT, sustainable development, environmental modeling, public policies and governances, learning psychology and e-learning and has developed digital learning tools about ecosystems and natural resources.

The four studied topics are agriculture induced pollution, climate change, the water resource and the fisheries. Within each field ViRTU@LiS develops learning tools to raise citizen awareness about natural resources management and environmental risks.

approach

This work relies on previous scientific results and research carried out in various projects aimed at assessing the environmental risks related to agricultural activities and water resources in particular. It revolves around four principles :

  • Usage of ICTs for social learning (web application, embedded 3D scene), autonomous exploration via CD-Rom and/or Internet;
  • Access to various learning pathways in order to discover the virtual world in accordance with the “Graduate Discovery” of information principles;
  • Support of multiple interactions between users where, as virtual stakeholders, they are either by design or by context engaged in an actual collaborative learning process;
  • Demonstration of promising possibilities offered by ICTs for task-oriented scientific documentation.

These four principles enhance the opportunity for the user to access context-relevant information for a better appropriation of knowledge on one this issue.

outcome and expectations

The goal is to structure the scientific knowledge about environmental management stakes and risks.

For non-scientific audiences, four tools have been designed :

  • The Personal Barometer for quantifying the environmental impacts of individual behaviours ;
  • The Scenario-Generator for exploring the changes in economical activity due to a sustainable use of resources;
  • The Virtual Visit where learning can take place;
  • The Multi-stakeholder Gameplay, for individuals to understand the stakes of governance and access to a shared resource.
special features

Embedded 3D scene, multiple users/stakeholders interactions, various learning pathways.
