This workshop presented a wide spectrum of innovative sustainable projects in the frame of the Urban Living Lab (ULL), gathering the Urban Agglomeration of Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines (Communauté d’Agglomération de Saint Quentin en Yvelines – CASQY) and UVSQ Versailles Grand Parc. The workshop was organised by REEDS Research Centre , with support by FONDATERRA, and with the involvement of some of the UVSQ industrial chairs (like Campus Durable and Econoving). This was the opening session of the event, and offers perspective on this three-day event.

The session “Eco-cities of the Future: Challenges of vision and analysis” took place at UVSQ, France on October 18 2012 within the framework of the International Workshop “Eco-cities of the Future. Innovation within territories”. It was introduced by Dr. Ioan Ciumasu (Chaire Econoving, UVSQ, France). The keynote speakers – Prof.Dr. Martin Dieterich (University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart-Hohenheim, Germany), Dr. Klaus Kubeczko (Senior Researcher, Austrian Institute of Techonolgy, Vienna, Austria) and Dr. Elena Lioubimtseva (Director, Environmental Studies Programme GVSU, Michigan USA)

CHALLENGER was built in 1988. At that time, it was a modern and innovative building. Twenty-four years later, the building is old-fashioned and too greedy in energy. The Group decided to renovate it. The new building uses innovation on top of the latest technology.

Three major players were invited to profile their experiences in building a vision of the future. Mr. George Heartwell, spoke about the importance of having a sustainable strategy based on an integrated planning and showed his impressive results. Prof. Zhu pointed out how China's growth trends show the great challenge of looking for a green development transition in order to be part of sustainable change. Prof. Sylvie Faucheux emphasised the advantages of The French Green Plan and the outstanding performance and evolution of OVSQ in local and international contexts.

Within the concept of ecocities, train stations can be considered as nodes, not only regarding transportation, but also energy, and even social activities as part of neighbourhood activities

How should we design the territory? How should we optimise the transport offer? We are facing a global change of paradigm and we are now going to manage a transfer from “transport” to “mobility”. This means several things, such as “more services and multi-modality” – says Marie Francoise Guyonnaud, president of Fondaterra. A new “green car” has been developed with the company Vedecom, for exemple. Innovation can also mean new ideas for services.
