Several members of REEDS (the project team for EJOLT) attended meetings and presentations in Rio de Janeiro on environmental justice conflicts. The psychological effects on children of environmental destruction was highlighted, as were issues of land-grabbing, uranium mining, oil and gas extraction, waste and ship-breaking, nuclear energy and climate change.

The UVSQ and Albion College, Michigan have signed an agreement and are working together to implement two new study options for Albion College Students : a Major in Sustainability Studies for their Bachelor of Arts degree offer as well as a one year course based at the UVSQ culminating in a Certificate of Sustainability Studies.

The second call is now open: 14 further researchers to be recruited in Paris region. UniverSud Paris together with its founders University Paris-Sud, University Versailles Saint-Quentin-en Yvelines, University Evry-Val-d’Essonne, Ecole Centrale Paris, ENS Cachan, launches on January 1st until 31st March 2012, the second call for applications of the European project RBUCE-UP.

An international Symposium on Ecological Debt took place in Paris on November 7th. It gathered international experts on the subject, as well as speakers from different countries. Several members of EJOLT, an international project on Environmental Justice Organisations, Liabilities and Trade in which REEDS participates, were participating, including two keynote speakers : Leida Rijnhout (ANPED) and Esperanza Martinez (Accion Ecologica).

Renewable energies, suitable to integrate electricity grids of middle and high tensions and to decentralize and diversify energy production portfolios, are considered as an optimal solution to tackle with major challenges in the 21st century. However, to benefit from low-carbon sources, energy systems will adopt new Smartgrid concept to distribute energy efficiently in decentralized networks of production and consumption, to be ‘self-healing’ or adaptive to changes and resilient to failures.
