An international Symposium on Ecological Debt took place in Paris on November 7th. It gathered international experts on the subject, as well as speakers from different countries. Several members of EJOLT, an international project on Environmental Justice Organisations, Liabilities and Trade in which REEDS participates, were participating, including two keynote speakers : Leida Rijnhout (ANPED) and Esperanza Martinez (Accion Ecologica).

La thèse en Economie Ecologique de Richard Loiret (début : mai 2010) : Valeur(s) de l'Ecodéveloppement, part de constats reliés systémiquement à plusieurs échelles conceptuelles de problématiques. Les questions se posent actuellement ainsi, chaque réponse résolvant ou non partie des questions des autres niveaux. NI : Comment territorialiser le passif de l'empreinte écologique nationale ? NII : Comment mesurer l'actif des territoires "naturels", ou biodiversité ? NIII : Existe t-il une contradiction au principe de Carnot ? Et si oui laquelle ? Renewable energies, suitable to integrate electricity grids of middle and high tensions and to decentralize and diversify energy production portfolios, are considered as an optimal solution to tackle with major challenges in the 21st century. However, to benefit from low-carbon sources, energy systems will adopt new Smartgrid concept to distribute energy efficiently in decentralized networks of production and consumption, to be ‘self-healing’ or adaptive to changes and resilient to failures.

The conference SRMining (Social Responsibility in Mining) was held from 19 to 20 October 2011 in Santiago de Chile. Its objectives were to strengthen understanding of the concept of ‘social license’; to discuss the complexity of social issues faced by the mining industry at the local, regional, national and international context; to promote SR as an integral part of strategic planning and management, to discuss existing experience and practice, and share leading thinking; and to explore diverse and innovative ways to put research and policies into action

REEDS member Frances Harrison attended a conference on a topic which is not yet often discussed; that of intergenerational fairness. The conference, based in Budapest, Hungary in October 2011, was jointly hosted by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology and WHAT IF - sustainability as intergenerational fairness.

REEDS International Centre for Research in Ecological Economics, Eco-innovation and Tool Development for Sustainability is a key player in a major European project to assist environmental justice organisations to develop assessment tools and scientific methodologies in the struggle for environmental justice. In particular, REEDS will be providing assistance in the areas of nuclear energy, oil and gas extraction and climate change, environmentl health and risk assessment, liabilities and valuation.
